Silvia Pérez Cruz : NPR

Spanish singer Silvia Pérez Cruz grew up within the cradle of magnificent extremes. Her hometown Palafrugell on the Costa Brava of the Mediterranean sea is famend as a lot for its gorgeous turquoise waters and dazzling summer season solar as it’s for biting bitter winds and unforgiving winter nights.

Amidst that chaos her songs had been born: brilliantly distinct little capsules of human expertise. Whether or not singing about pleasure, ache, grief or curiosity, that duality between sunshine and grey skies is current in her work.

Yo soy inescrutable (I’m inscrutable),” she cries on “Salir distinto.” Her emotive, jazz-tinged voice and ’54 acoustic guitar (she picked it up at a classic store some years in the past in New York) transcends time and bodily area. “Yo prefiero el desastre / Y escucharte sin perjuicio (I desire catastrophe / And to hearken to you with out prejudice),” she coos. And on this second, she’s unimaginable to show away from — a vessel for eons of melancholic Mediterranean secrets and techniques on the Tiny Desk.
